Scars & Tears After Birth
During childbirth, many women experience perineal tears or may have an episiotomy (a surgical cut to the perineum). Similarly, women who have had a caesarean section (C-section) may experience adhesions as the layers of tissue heal, which can affect how muscles glide and contract, potentially leading to pain, pelvic floor dysfunction, or bladder and bowel issues.
What We Treat: Scars and Tears After Birth
After childbirth, perineal tears or episiotomies can lead to scar tissue formation and as the wound heals, scar tissue may form and tighten, potentially causing discomfort during intercourse or everyday activities.
This can cause tightness, adhesions, and discomfort in the affected area, impacting activities such as intercourse, physical activity, and daily movements. Additionally, women who have undergone a caesarean section may face complications such as adhesions or scar tissue that can restrict abdominal and pelvic function, leading to issues such as pelvic floor dysfunction, bladder and bowel problems, and painful intercourse.
For women who have undergone breast surgery, abdominal surgery, or gynaecological procedures, scar tissue management is vital to ensure the healing process proceeds optimally. Scar massage is an effective technique to soften scar tissue, improve flexibility, and reduce discomfort.
Common symptoms of scar tissue include:
• tightness, pulling, or discomfort around the scar area
• tenderness, itching, or numbness around the scar
• appearance of the scar being pink, red, or slightly raised
• pain during movement, sex, or physical activity
Scar massage can promote healing by stimulating the skin, improving blood circulation, and reducing scar tissue’s thickness. It helps moisturize the scar, enhances flexibility, and promotes cellular growth that gradually diminishes the scar’s appearance.

The good news is that scar massage and other physiotherapy techniques can help restore flexibility, improve mobility, and reduce pain associated with scars from childbirth and surgery.
Specialist pelvic health physiotherapists are trained to help with scar rehabilitation and recovery following childbirth or surgical procedures like a C-section. Our team will guide you through various treatments tailored to your specific needs, including:
• manual scar therapy: a hands-on approach to release tension and improve movement in the scar and surrounding tissues, promoting better flexibility and function
• breathwork and relaxation exercises: these techniques can alleviate discomfort and reduce the sensation of tightness around your scar
• pelvic floor exercises: we will guide you in how to exercise the pelvic floor muscles correctly, including using real-time ultrasound for targeted feedback
• prescriptive exercises: these exercises are designed to improve the mobility of the tissues, alleviate pain, and prevent scar tissue from becoming restrictive or causing further issues
• scar massage: once your scar has fully healed (usually 6-8 weeks after childbirth or surgery), we will teach you how to massage the scar effectively to reduce sensitivity and promote healing (even if it has been months or years since your surgery or birth, scar massage can still help, as scars continue to evolve for up to two years)
Key Benefits of Scar Massage:
• increases scar tissue elasticity
• reduces the appearance of scars
• improves mobility in the affected area
• reduces pain, itching, and discomfort
• helps prevent complications such as restricted movement
Whether your scar is from childbirth, C-section, or other surgeries, our team of pelvic health physiotherapists will work with you to develop a personalised rehabilitation plan that supports optimal recovery and improves your overall function.
